Freeport, Grand Bahama – The Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) proudly unveiled a striking sculpture of a Hawksbill Turtle at its headquarters, marking the official launch of Freeport’s 70th anniversary celebrations. This milestone commemorates the signing of the historic Hawksbill Creek Agreement in 1955, which laid the foundation for the city’s development and free trade zone.
The unveiling ceremony, led by GBPA Acting Chairman Sarah St. George, emphasized the deep connection between Freeport’s identity and the iconic Hawksbill Turtle. “This beautiful, understated piece symbolizes the resilience and continuity of our community,” St. George remarked. “The Hawksbill Turtle, one of Grand Bahama’s oldest residents, has become a powerful emblem of our history, progress, and commitment to sustainability.”
She continued, “As it happens, this year 2025 is also the 70th anniversary of the birth of Freeport. The Hawksbill Turtle gave its name to the Hawksbill Creek Agreement in 1955, which created the Free Trade Zone and fueled the explosive growth of this city. Over the years, Freeport has seen its fair share of challenges and triumphs, and this anniversary is a time to reflect on our accomplishments and look ahead to our future.”
St. George also highlighted the significance of the sculpture, stating, “We thought the turtle sculptures were a lovely symbol for this building. The next generation swims next to the older turtle, reminding us of the importance of continuity and cherishing our legacy. The turtles are in motion as we look to the future.”
The sculpture, designed by artist Jacki Boss, is made of reinforced concrete, ensuring its resilience against the elements. Weighing 800 pounds, the artwork features a mother Hawksbill Turtle swimming alongside her young, signifying the passing of knowledge, tradition, and responsibility to future generations. St. George extended gratitude to the GBPA’s Safety, Security & Facilities team for expertly installing the sculpture, ensuring its place as a new landmark within the city.
She said she was passionate about the ocean and stated, “Our GBPA Public Art initiative is our way of bringing awareness to the magical beauty, blessing, and variety of our marine life but also reminds us of how fragile our ecosystem is. My partner Rupert Hayward who brought Coral Vita to Grand Bahama is also a champion for environmental preservation and sustainability.”
As part of the year-long 70th anniversary celebrations, GBPA has planned a series of community-driven events under the theme of ‘Honoring Freeport’s Past While Shaping Its Future.’ These events will highlight the island’s rich culture, artistic talents, and environmental stewardship. Among the many initiatives planned on March 14-16th we’ll have Freeport Fashion Week, which will showcase our Grand Bahamian designers. On 4-6th of April, ArtLucaya will celebrate our island’s vibrant arts scene, and an Earth Day initiative will see the planting of 70 trees along major thoroughfares. Freeport’s Got Talent will return in honor of Freeport’s 70th. A new initiative this year is Freeport Food Fest to celebrate our island’s culinary heritage, and the celebrations will culminate in December with Christmas in the City, a grand holiday lighting ceremony that will illuminate Freeport in the festive spirit.
The full calendar of activities will be available on the GBPA website and updated regularly to engage residents and visitors alike.
Reflecting on Freeport’s journey over the past seven decades, St. George encouraged the community to take pride in its accomplishments. “Like Freeport, I too celebrate 70 years. 70 years since I came to the Bahamas with my father, Edward St. George, when he first arrived in The Bahamas in 1955 as Chief Magistrate. As we commemorate this anniversary, we celebrate not only our history but also the people who have built and sustained this city through times of prosperity and challenge. This is our year to honor our legacy and move forward with renewed determination.”
She closed with a note of gratitude to the GBPA team, saying, “Your tireless work and consistent efforts to create better lives here is invaluable. You champion Freeport daily -often unsung, unobserved, humbly, and quietly – much like these magnificent Hawksbill Turtles. Today’s unveiling is just the beginning of what promises to be a year of celebration and renewal.”
GBPA invites everyone to enjoy and participate in the celebration of our city’s rich history.
