GRAND BAHAMA PORT AUTHORITY ADDRESSES FREQUENT POWER OUTAGES WITH GRAND BAHAMA POWER COMPANY

July 18, 2024 – Freeport, Grand Bahama – The Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) has discussed with the Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) the frequent power outages experienced recently, impacting residents and businesses on the island.

These discussions were initiated following GBPC’s notification and press statement on July 2, where they informed GBPA and the public of the challenges they were experiencing with their base plant. During the meetings, GBPC explained their challenges with their primary generating unit, which has led to the recent outages as well as outlined a detailed plan to remediate the issue. GBPC has assured us that their issues will be resolved by the beginning of next week at the latest.

“We understand the significant impact that these outages have on our community. GBPA’s Operating Protocol & Regulatory Framework Agreement holds Grand Bahama Power Company accountable in matters such as this.” said Ian Rolle, President of the GBPA. “Our priority is to ensure that our residents and businesses receive the quality of service they deserve. We will work diligently with GBPC to resolve these issues promptly.”

Grand Bahama has always led the country in providing reliable utility services, a standard in which the GBPA takes great pride. We are committed to ensuring that our island remains the leader in this sector, delivering consistent and dependable services to all.

GBPA and GBPC are in regular discussions and have an established practice of quarterly check-ins and reports that assess the level of customer service under the regulatory framework. These regular interactions ensure that GBPC maintains its mandated level of service, providing consistent and reliable power to the community.

GBPA will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates to the public as new information becomes available.
