100% Bahamian Owned Venture to Make its Mark in GB’s Tourism Sector

“I am impressed by the diversity of the Arawak Adventures Group; they have created a partnership, not only as a team of talented individuals, but as investors as well,” shared Ian Rolle, President of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) as he congratulated stakeholders of the Arawak Adventures Group on the ground breaking of Bahamas ZIP this past weekend.

“As we can see, the result is a $1.4M tourism product which lends support to an important market need, the creation of employment opportunities for locals, and a catalyst for substantial ‘spin-off’ opportunities for likeminded visionaries,” he stated.

Rolle also noted the need for greater collaboration and participation by locals for a more rapid and sustained growth of the island’s economy. “We must hold the view that, if you cannot accomplish the goal on your own…..perhaps it’s time to share your vision with others, whom you trust and share similar values. Competition in today’s tourism market is fierce; we must do what it takes to create new uncontested market space if Grand Bahama is to remain a viable cruise destination. This is what Bahamas ZIP has done and I applaud their efforts,” continued President Rolle.

The island’s tourism product continues to gain momentum, as existing and new tour operators create new quality tours for guests visiting the island. Bahamas ZIP’s multi-faceted approach is expected to facilitate an array of activities including, land and water based activities, entertainment, traditional and eco-based tours, as well as dining and shopping amenities for guests. It is also anticipated that this venture will create at least 30 construction jobs and 40-60 permanent jobs when fully operational.

Senior Manager of Business Development for GBPA, Derek Newbold, says the investment bodes well for Grand Bahama’s tourism product, as a new and unique feature for the island.

“The Bahamas ZIP project is a very dynamic and well thought out undertaking.  Furthermore, it can inspire other Bahamians to participate in the opportunities our tourism sector continues to present,” cited Newbold.

Acknowledging the individual accomplishments of each partner associated with the project, Newbold added that, it is evident of a shift in the mindset of Bahamians.

“I echo the sentiments of President Rolle in that; it is refreshing to see a group of Bahamian professionals, who have put their resources to work in such an innovative way. This project is good for Grand Bahama, it is good for our tourism product and it is great that it is being accomplished through a team of young visionaries, who saw an opportunity and united to achieve the results we anticipate. We wish them every success and a speedy completion to launch.” Newbold concluded.
